Pitbulls

I Biology we recently had to do a project on dog evolution. YES! So I wrote an essay on Pitbulls. Enjoy.

The well know phrase “a dog is a man [and woman’s] best friend” rings true. Throughout the ages humans have breed dogs to carry out tasks that perhaps wouldn’t have been possible without the dog’s help. Working hand and paw to hunt birds,  pull sleds, or be a companion, the dog is a marvelous creature that has gained numerous adaptations.
If you know about dogs, you have probably heard about the notorious pitbull. These pups carry around a bad rap because of the quite recent negative media attention. So much hate has been surrounding these dogs that in some areas, owning a Pit is illegal. Before the mid-80s Pits were considered beloved by America. That was until “...dogfighting made a comeback in the 80s, and the pit bull is the dog of choice. It is also the preferred guard dog for drug dealers and gangs, with a hugely publicized attack in 1987 in which a pit bull guarding a marijuana crop in California mauls and kills a two-and-a-half year-old boy.”-Bastian.  Yet, as the ASPCA states: “ it’s bad ownership—not bad dogs—that causes pit bulls to be aggressive.” Skewed media bias as well alongside with sorrowful stereotypes have caused hostile attitudes to be directed toward these dogs.
Pitbulls were believed to have originated in England as bull biters or in Rome as war dogs. To create the modern Pitbull, the Old English Bulldog was crossed with a Terrier to form a more agile dog. These dogs were recognized for their strength and strong bite, so bear and bull baiting resulted. Pits are 30 to 85 pounds and are muscular in their build. Pitbulls can be aggressive towards other dogs but are very loyal and kind to humans. Early socialization is recommended.
Breeding dogs can cause a lot of problems. Diseases can be passed down in a family line. Pitbulls can have heart problems, digestive disorders, hip problems, and bleeding disorders.  Homeless dogs are abandoned for a dog who is “pure.” Breeding creates a culture of superiority and increases the number of dogs needing a home, creating less of a space for a shelter dog.
The Pitbull’s bad rap has fueled hate driven toward this loyal, kind, and loving breed. Before the mid 1980s, these dogs were called “nanny dogs” for their gentle nature. With their strength and need for love, this breed of dog is one to consider living with. They need homes too.  “Of the 35,000 Pit Bulls available for adoption right now, many of them will not make it out alive. The lucky ones will spend months or years in a shelter.” -

Nine months later I emerge with the hopes of being vaccinated soon. FUcking hell. What a trip. This pandemic is going to require a lot of processing in the future but for now, I want to share and record some things I am very proud that I accomplished over this period of time. I was able to help start and run a campaign to eventually get my high school drama teacher who spread the rumor that I called the cops at a cast party which ruined my social life at that school while stalking me and my friends and constantly trying to get me in compromising and damn disgusting and gross situations. His charm to his superiors and the gaslighting and abuse of students has been heavily weighing on me in a way I have yet to fully deal with. I spoke out in high school and was silenced, threatened, and made to feel unwelcome. Yet the internet and living in a whole separate continent does wonders for confidence. I helped create a petition, gathered testimonies, and launched this campaign with my friends

Rainy Night Writing

There is something quite different about writing when it is raining outside than when it isn't. I despise my frozen toes and fingers, yet I love drinking chocolate almond milk with banana bread. It seems almost enchanting, like creativity is plopping on your rooftop. Writing in the rain, so odd. Writing in the rain It is like laughing during a thunder cloud, in perfect harmony with nature, rhyming and paralleling the weather, writing in the rain, creativity pours from you, as you hear the pitter patter, you wonder where the drops will all go, writing in the rain, a clean slate to begin again, a downpour of ideas, soon to come again, I love writing in the rain.
